First: is this a leak problem or a structural one?
These get conflated constantly, and the repairs are different.
A leaking crack is a water-management problem. Water under pressure outside the wall finds the easiest path through it. Sealing the path is a legitimate fix, provided the pressure is also addressed.
A structural crack indicates the wall is moving — under lateral soil pressure, from settlement below it, or from both. Sealing it treats the symptom and hides the evidence you would need to track whether movement is continuing.
Rough indicators. Vertical or near-vertical cracks of fairly uniform width in a poured wall are commonly shrinkage cracks, which leak but are not usually structural. Horizontal cracking, particularly around mid-height of a wall, suggests lateral pressure and warrants a structural opinion before anything is injected. Stair-step cracking through mortar joints in a block wall, and any crack where the two faces are offset out of plane, likewise.
Before agreeing to a repair, mark the ends of the crack with a dated pencil line and photograph it with a ruler alongside. If a company is unwilling to wait even a few weeks to establish whether it is moving, that reluctance is information.
Injection methods, and what each is for
Crack injection is the standard interior repair for a poured concrete wall, and it comes in two chemistries that are not interchangeable.
- Polyurethane foams on contact with water and expands to fill the void. It stays flexible, so it tolerates minor further movement, and it can be injected into an actively leaking crack. It is a water-stopping repair, not a structural one.
- Epoxy cures rigid and bonds the two faces, restoring some structural continuity across the crack. It needs a dry, clean crack to bond properly, so it is poorly suited to one that is actively weeping, and because it is rigid it will simply crack again alongside if the wall keeps moving.
The failure mode worth knowing: epoxy used on a wall that is still moving, or polyurethane sold as a structural fix. Ask which chemistry is proposed and why that one for this crack.
Neither works on a block wall the way it does on poured concrete, because the water travels through hollow cores rather than a single fissure. Block walls generally need a drainage approach rather than injection alone.
Piedmont clay is why the outside matters
York County sits on residual red clay — soil weathered in place, fine-textured, slow to drain, and moderately expansive. That combination is the reason exterior water management is part of any durable repair here.
Clay holds water against the wall rather than letting it drain away, so after sustained rain the hydrostatic pressure on a below-grade wall is real and sustained. Seal one crack and the water finds the next easiest path — the wall-floor joint, a form-tie hole, another crack. Homeowners then conclude the repair failed, when what actually happened is that the pressure was never reduced.
The unglamorous items that reduce it are the ones most often skipped: gutters that actually discharge well clear of the house, grade that falls away from the wall for several feet, downspouts extended or piped, and no irrigation zone running against the foundation. These cost very little relative to any injection or drainage system and they address the cause.
There is a second reason to care locally. That same clay shrinks when dry and swells when wet, and moisture swings against a foundation are a common driver of movement in this region. Stabilizing the moisture regime helps the structure as well as the leak.
When drainage is the right answer instead
Where water is entering at the wall-floor joint rather than a discrete crack, or entering at multiple points, or coming up through the floor, crack repair is the wrong tool. Interior perimeter drainage to a sump handles water that is going to arrive regardless. Exterior excavation and membrane stops it arriving at all, at considerably greater cost and disruption.
If a sump system is proposed, ask what happens during a power cut — severe storms here cause both the water and the outage — and whether a battery backup is included or extra.

South Carolina licenses and registers contractors through the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation; verify the number and its classification there. For anything structural, an independent professional engineer who is not selling the repair remains the most reliable diagnosis available.
